BEV TAYLOR
27 March 1936 - 28 September 2015
World Renowned Artist
Bev was very much in the vanguard of ‘lifestylers’,
having settled in the district in the mid-1980s. Health
issues relating to the need to be away from noise led Bev
and Glenn to ‘Puketotara’ on Oneriri Road, a few
kilometres west of Kaiwaka. The house had been built in
the early 1930s for Forrie and Lil Linnell. Apparently, a
50-cent deposit lodged with land agent Roy Corker
secured the purchase!
Bev loved birds, particularly ‘chooks’ and this led to his
artistic specialty of painting them, in every shape, size,
and disposition, with considerable skill and subsequently
to an appreciative market. He (and family) built a gallery
at Puketotara, where he exhibited an increasingly wide
range of his artistic output. He loved living in the
country, and in particular enjoyed the Kaipara landscape.
His love of place was sensitively captured in his art.
Many folk requested commissions to preserve special
memories.
Bev was generous with his time, and conducted
workshops to encourage other amateur artists. He was
often asked to speak to various groups. A special
character, Bev possessed a marvellous sense of humour
with a brilliant sense of timing when telling a joke or
story.
Over the years, without any formal art training, Bev’s
artistic gifts became increasingly recognised and led to
his paintings being exhibited widely, including highly
regarded international venues.
Bev was never pretentious and entirely lacked any sense
of hubris. He appreciated the beauty in his environment
and articulated it feelingly in his form of art expression.
He was a generous, warm, and compassionate individual
who considerably enriched this community.
Goodbye Bev - true friend. RIP
~Peter Linnell
Recognised as one of New Zealand's leading
representational artists, Bev Taylor had many successful
solo exhibitions in both public and commercial galleries in
New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States of
America.
Bev had been a working member of the New Zealand
fellowship of Artists, and a member of the Fosseway
Artists, England, the Wiltshire Guild of Artists, England,
and the Australian Society of Miniature Art (Qld.) Inc. He
was Patron of Mangawhai Artists Incorporated and an
enthusiastic art educator, passing on his skills and
knowledge in classes. He framed the Terry Moyle pictures
in the foyer of the Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall, one of his
last jobs.
Bev was born in 1936 in Swindon Wiltshire, England. He
joined the Royal Navy in 1951, where he served for ten
years. He started painting in 1971 and was self taught. Bev
immigrated to New Zealand in 1972 with his wife and three
children and there are now six grandchildren. He built his
own studio-gallery on Oneriri Road, and kept twenty-two
varieties of poultry.

Mad Max: Fury Road
Friday 16th October 7:30pm (R16)
An apocalyptic story set in the furthest reaches of
our planet, in a stark desert landscape where
humanity is broken, and almost everyone is crazed
fighting for the necessities of life. Within this world
exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to
restore order. There's Max, a man of action and a
man of few words, who seeks peace of mind
following the loss of his wife and child in the
aftermath of the chaos. And Furiosa, a woman of
action and a woman who believes her path to
survival may be achieved if she can make it across
the desert back to her childhood homeland.
Starring: Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, Nicholas Hoult.

KAIWAKA’s GALLAHER CONNECTION
The name Dave
Gallaher is in the
news this week for
the auction of his
1905 jersey. The
110 year old rugby
jersey was worn
by this legendary
All Black captain
fetched $411,826
at an auction in
Wales
on
9
October. The black jersey has the
embroidered New Zealand silver fern
on its chest and stitched canvas overlay
to shoulders, upper
chest and back area.
It is complete with
leather
v-shaped
neckline.
He is remembered
for
his
brilliant
rugby career, but
also
for
his
courageous war time
effort. Sadly he died at Passchendaele,
Belgium October 1917
David Gallagher (later Gallaher) was
born at Ramelton, County Donegal,
Ireland, on 30 October 1873, the son of
James Gallagher, a shopkeeper, and his
wife, Maria McCloskie, a teacher. The
couple's other offspring were: Joseph
(born 1867), Isabella (1868), James
(1869), Maria (called Molly, 1870),
Jane (1871), Thomas (1872), William
(1875), Oswald (1876), and James
Patrick (1878). In May 1878 the
Gallaghers sailed from Belfast on the
Lady Jocelyn in the second party of
emigrants for George Vesey Stewart's
Katikati Special Settlement in the Bay
of Plenty. On arriving in New Zealand,
the family altered their surname to
"Gallaher" in an effort to reduce
confusion over its spelling and
pronunciation. Life was difficult on a
small farm and Maria's salary from
teaching was for a time a godsend.
Dave Gallaher's captaincy of the 1905–
6 New Zealand team, which toured
Britain and France, sealed his place in
New Zealand rugby history.
He married Ellen Ivy May Francis, the
sister of a fellow All Black, at
Auckland on 10 October 1906. They
had one daughter in 1908, Nora.
When war came in 1914 Gallaher was
well past 40, but when a younger
brother was killed in action he enlisted.
In February 1917 he sailed again for
Europe and in June became
sergeant in the 2nd Battalion,
Auckland Infantry Regiment, New
Zealand Expeditionary Force. In the
attack on Gravenstafel Spur in the mud
of Flanders on 4 October 1917, David
Gallaher was shot in the face. He died
later that day at No 3 Australian
Casualty Clearing Station, aged almost
44. He is buried at Nine Elms
cemetery,
Poperinge,
where
his
regulation gravestone bears the silver
fern – and gives his age as 41.
New Zealand rugby sides touring
Europe have since regularly visited his
grave site.
Kaiwaka’s connection?
Nell McCloskie Gallaher married EV
“Ted” Hargreaves. Nell was the
daughter of Dave Gallaher’s oldest
brother Joseph.
Nell, the daughter of Joseph and Ellen
and the niece of Dave Gallaher was
born in 1909 and was a teacher like her
grandmother (Ian Ferguson, a local
farmer, remembers Miss Gallaher
teaching him at Springdale School).
Nell was very tall and an excellent
basketball player. She met and married
Ted Hargreaves in Auckland, and
before their sons, Robert and Murray
were born moved to farm at Ngamotu
on the Oneriri Peninsula with Ted’s
father, Ernest, and brother Russell
Hargreaves.
Dave Gallaher’s great nephew Robert
Hargreaves represented New Zealand
in athletics. He was one of the 69
competitors to go to the 1966 British
and
Commonwealth
Games
in
Kingston, Jamaica, where he competed
in the shotput. Bob began his athletics
in
the
Kaiwaka
Athletic Club.
Robert used to travel
to sporting fixtures
with Don Oliver
(110kg
weightlifting), Robin
Tait (discus), and Les
Mills (shotput) - can
you
imagine,
all
these big men, travelling to sporting
venues in a wee Austin car!

Large Print and Audio books
Thank you to everyone in the library
team who helped with this swap this
week. It’s a big job to collect up all the
books we currently have, process them
in the computer, pack them up, take
them to the swap (Kerikeri) this time,
select the new books, pack them up,
bring them back to the library, process
them and get them onto the shelves,
and many hands make light work.
Dargaville books
And now we’ve got the Large Print and
Audio books sorted, it’s nearly time for
the Dargaville books to go back and
new ones come in. Now is the time to
take a good look at those shelves to see
if there’s a title of interest to you,
before they go. These books don’t need
to be back with us before the swap, so
you can keep hold of them until their
usual due dates.
Listen to books on
your smartphone!
Did you know that if
you
have
a
smartphone you can
download books to it,
as well as to a tablet
or computer? It’s
very handy to have a
book on your phone
for those odd times
you want to fill a
space - waiting in a
queue, out in the
garden,
taking
a
walk... You don’t
need to be online to
listen to an audio
book once you’ve
downloaded it.
We have two free
services available to us, Overdrive and

Book Reviews by Wendy
Singing Home the Whale by Mandy
Hager
Will Jackson is staying at his uncle's
place in the Marlborough Sounds,
while his parents are away working at a
mine in Australia. He doesn't want to
be there, but he doesn't want to be at
home in Wellington, either, after what
happened.
A baby orca arrives in the bay. It's
apparently a threat to the salmon farm
nearby, and is a long way from it's own
pod and family. Some in town want to
kill the orca or drive it away. Will
wants to protect it, and help it find its
way home.
The story is told from two perspectives
- Will, and the Orca
he names Min. It's a
lovely tale which I
have no hesitation in
recommending.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by
Neil Gaiman
"It began for our narrator forty years
ago when the family lodger stole their
car and committed suicide in it, stirring
up ancient powers
best left undisturbed.
Sark creatures from
beyond this world are
on the loose, and it
will take everything
our narrator has just
to stay alive" there is
primal horror here,
and
menace
unleashed - within his
family and from the
forces
that
have
gathered to destroy it.
His only defence is
three women, on a
farm at the end of the
lane. The youngest of
them claims that her
duckpond is an ocean.

Another page turned over on the
calendar. Oh this is so scary, time is
just flying by if you are busy or
otherwise cruising by however it may
be.
A fickle September as usual; we started
with that beautiful day on the 1st then
the weather deteriorated somewhat
after that. Very cold strong winds. The
sun was warming up although it was
hard to tell with all that wind however
it did pick up later in the month.
Rain-wise, we recorded 190mm for
September; in 2014 we recorded
162mm. We had rain on 14 days of the
month.
For the first 9 months of the year we
had 889mm and for 2014 we had
1294mm. I wondered how there was
such a big difference but in June/July
2015 we had 176mm and in June/July
2014 we had 600mm.
Our wettest September since 1987 was
1989 with 249mm. Our driest
September since 1987 was 2000 with
40mm. Our driest first 9 months of any
year since 1987 was 1987 with 687mm,
and our wettest was 2008 with 1439.
The Brynderwyn waterfall is not
flowing very fast, which is not a good
sign at this time of the year. Predictions
are that we are in for a drought, so be

Outlook
El Nino update - it's looking very much
like the El Nino of 97/98 which was the
strongest since 1950. Temperatures and
rainfall totals are equally likely to be
near average or below average. Soil
moisture levels are about equally likely
to be in the near normal or below
normal ranges. River flows are most
likely to be near normal.

Bang."
Having read American Gods and

of this novel, and was not disappointed.
This book is on the Dargaville shelves
in the library until early December.
BZRK, BZRK Reloaded, BZRK
Apocalypse by Michael Grant
BZRK
is
an
abbreviation
of
"berserk", and the
name of a French
Resistance-style
group waging war
against
others
who are trying to
take
over
the
human mind with
nano-technology.
The
Armstrong
twins want the
world turned into a utopia with no wars
or conflicts, everybody is happy all the
time, and where they are not seen as the
freaks they are.
BZRK are trying to stop them, through
a guerilla group of teenagers who are
recruited and kept in small cells so no-
one knows too much should they be
caught. But who is at the helm?
I really enjoyed this three-book series,
which should be read in order. I'd read
another book by this author earlier in
the year (review to come) and was keen
for more.
These books are in the Young Adults
(YP) section of the library; the books
will be found on the Rental Fiction
shelves until 1 July 2016, but are all
free to borrow. ~Wendy

KAIWAKA CARES
October is turning into a busy
month for Kaiwaka Cares.
Who are we? Kaiwaka Cares is made
up of a dedicated group of Kaiwaka
residents. Some of us are new to the
area, and some have been here for quite
some time. Our aim is simply to
provide support and caring for the
people of Kaiwaka. We are: Helen
Marsh, Scott Dalziell, Iris Kelly, Janine
Boult, and Rhona Vickoce.
Sponsors: It is always gr atifying to
have members of the community offer
to support us. Because we are such a
new group we are not eligible yet for a
number of the normal funding
providers. Therefore we pay for rent etc
by fundraising with raffles and other
projects such as selling the gardening
gloves.
Current sponsor companies include
Rana Health, Treat Massage and U
Beauty. We will forever be grateful to
Yvonne Brown who is one of
Kaiwaka’s greatest supporters, and the
force behind Kate’s Place.
If you wish to donate to keep the drop-
in centre going or have something you
would like to give us to raffle don’t be
shy, just get in touch.
Raffles: We still have a pampering
raffle going. First prize is a gift basket
and a massage, second prize is a
massage and third prize is a beauty
voucher. Buy your tickets from the
drop-in centre or by emailing
caring4kaiwaka@gmail.com or talk to
Yvonne at Kate's Place.
Printing: Our pr inter has been
popular. It can print, scan or copy
either single or double-sided. Costs are
20c for black and white copies per side
and colour copies are 50c per side. Just
bring in your printing on a flash drive
or
it
to
Volunteers Needed: Just like any
other community service we rely on
volunteers to help keep us going. If you
have spare time on a Monday,
Wednesday or Friday to help out at our
drop-in centre, we are looking for more
volunteers to extend our roster. You
wouldn't need to be available every
week, even once a month would help
our team roster. And yes we will
provide all the training and support you
may need. Come talk to us at the centre
or email us.
Feedback: Whilst we would love to
help out everyone all the time this is
not always possible. If you wish to give
us feedback at any time please feel free
to pop into the drop-in centre, email us
or pop in and see Yvonne at Kate’s
Place.
What's coming up? Our mini-courses
are in the pipeline so watch out for
notices on this. Each session will take
about 1.5 hours and will be in the
evening or the weekend. So keep an
eye out in the Bugle for developments
or follow us on Facebook. Or if you
want to get in touch email us on
caring4kaiwaka@gmail.com or come
into the drop-in centre.
ASSUMPTIONS
A lady in an airport lounge
bought a packet of biscuits
and sat down to read the
newspaper. She heard a
rustling noise and looked up to see the
man beside her helping himself to the
biscuits. Not wanting to make a scene,
she leaned over and took one herself,
hoping he’d get the message. Then she
heard some more rustling. She couldn’t
believe it. The man was helping
himself to another biscuit! There was
only one left! She watched in disbelief
as he broke the remaining biscuit in
two, pushed half across to her, popped
the other half in his mouth, and left.
She was still furious when her flight
was announced. Imagine how she felt
when she opened her handbag to get
her ticket out - and found her unopened
packet of biscuits!
Now be honest, didn't you assume the
stranger was helping himself to her
biscuits? Of course you did.
Too often we are guilty of making
assumptions about people, and once
you put someone in a box it’s hard to
think of them any other way. Every
time a good tailor sees a client, he takes
new measurements. He never assumes
they are the same size as they were last
time. That’s a good policy.
Never make assumptions. Once you do,
you stop paying attention and miss
clues that can help you know what they
really need.
“ to answer before listening - that is a
folly.” Proverbs 18: 13 NIV

ANOTHER ASSUMPTION
A woman had just returned to her home
from an evening of church services
when she was startled by an intruder.
She caught the man in the act of
robbing her home of its valuables and
yelled:
"Stop !! Acts 2:38 !!" (Repent and be
Baptised, in the name of Jesus Christ,
so that your sins may be forgiven.)
The burglar stopped in his tracks. The
woman calmly called the police and
explained what she had done.
As the officer cuffed the man to take
him in, he asked the burglar:
"Why did you just stand there? All the
old lady did was yell a scripture to
you."
"Scripture?" replied the burglar, "she
said she had an axe and two 38s!!"

addition to the two places to be
awarded to young women on Spirit of
Adventure Leadership voyages.
The Zonta Club of Mangawhai is a

who meet monthly over dinner for fun
and friendship. They raise funds to
support a variety of projects locally,
nationally and internationally as part of
Zonta International , a service and

rights for all. They work closely with
other local organisations to help
combat domestic violence; support
national bodies such as the Sophie
Elliot Foundation, Gynaecological
Cancer and White Ribbon; and provide
international aid to projects that help
women overcome barriers to equal
education, health care, legal rights, and
employment
The Club welcomes new members and
would love to hear from you – contact

ShakeOut 2015
Everyone - everywhere - should know
the right action to take during an
earthquake. New Zealand ShakeOut is
a national earthquake drill taking place
at 9:15am on 15 October 2015.
It’s a chance for everyone to practise
the right action to take during an
earthquake - Drop, Cover and Hold.
It’s also a chance to learn more about
what to do before and after an
earthquake.
Signing up at www.shakeout.govt.nz
will only take a couple of minutes. As
well as being counted, you’ll be kept
up to date with how to get ready.
Northland Earthquake Hazards
Northland (along with South Otago)
has the lowest earthquake risk in NZ –
earthquakes are generally small in
magnitude and are seldom felt. No
active faults are mapped within the
Northland Region, and the whole
Northland peninsula has been generally
regarded as tectonically stable.
There have been 8 earthquakes felt in
Northland with a magnitude greater
than 3.5 since 1960 (the largest at 4.9).
The most recent earthquake activity in
Northland was measured near Tokau
Bay (south of Matauri Bay) in
September 2006 with the largest of the
small swarm of earthquakes measuring
3.4 in magnitude and felt by residents
in Kerikeri and Russell. No damage
was reported.
Twenty thousand earthquakes are
recorded each year in and around New
Zealand, but only about 300 of these
are felt. New Zealand experiences
many earthquakes because it is located
across the boundary of two tectonic
plates.
A large earthquake could happen
anywhere in New Zealand
All of New Zealand is susceptible to
earthquakes. However, there is a
variation in the level of earthquake
activity across the country. Wellington
is considered one of the most active of
New Zealand’s seismic regions and
Auckland one of the least active. Large
earthquakes can still occur in regions
with lower activity or deemed lower in
risk than others. This is best illustrated
by the recent events in Christchurch.
